French

Intent

The intent of our French programme at Holy Cross, is to foster a love for languages and cultivate a global mindset among our pupils. We aim to provide an engaging curriculum that enables our pupils to:

  • Develop fundamental language skills, achieving proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in French through immersive experiences and interactive activities.
  • Enhance understanding and appreciation of French-speaking cultures, traditions, and customs, promoting empathy and respect for diversity.
  • Become lifelong learners, equipped with critical thinking and problem-solving skills that are transferable across subjects.
  • Participate in authentic communication and collaboration within a supportive environment, enabling our pupils to express themselves clearly and confidently in French.

Implementation

To realise our intent, we have implemented a structured and dynamic French curriculum using the Twinkl scheme of work, which adheres to national curriculum requirements while also incorporating the following best practices:

  • Our French curriculum is sequenced logically, building on prior knowledge and skills. The Twinkl scheme of work provides age-appropriate themes and vocabulary, ensuring a steady progression in learning.
  • We employ a variety of teaching strategies, including songs, games, role-play, and storytelling, to make learning enjoyable and accessible for all students. Technology is also integrated, using apps and online resources to enrich language acquisition.
  • Regular opportunities for speaking and listening activities are provided, including paired and group work to develop conversational skills. We encourage our pupils to use French in context, with real-life scenarios woven throughout lessons.
  • Ongoing assessment is used to track pupil progress and inform teaching. Regular feedback support each pupil’s language development journey.

Impact

The impact of our French programme is carefully measured, demonstrating the effectiveness of our intent and implementation:

  • Pupils demonstrate progress in their language skills. Regular assessments reflect good levels of attainment, with many of our pupils expressing enjoyment and enthusiasm for learning French.
  • Feedback indicates that our pupils are developing their cultural awareness and show increased interest in French-speaking countries and their cultures. This cultural competence promotes a sense of global citizenship among our pupils, which aligns with our Catholic Social Teaching principles.
  • Our pupils articulate their ideas confidently in French, displaying increased motivation and a willingness to communicate in the target language.
“Language is not a genetic gift, it is a social gift. Learning a new language is becoming a member of the club – the community of speakers of that language.”
